Pike lure fishing: a wire trace, lure choice and prepared landing

Prepare bite protection, a suitable net and tools before the first cast, then choose a lure for its route through the water.

What trace should I use for pike lure fishing?

For this introductory example, use a ready-made wire trace intended for pike lure fishing. The Pike Anglers Club requires protection from teeth and warns that ordinary nylon is unsuitable. A fine fluorocarbon perch rig is not automatically pike tackle either.

Before each session, inspect the wire, connections and snap. The snap must close fully; replace a trace with a sharp kink or damage. Match strength and length to the tackle and manufacturer’s instructions. This is a lure-fishing trace, without the extra uptrace used in some bait-fishing rigs.

How should I choose a lure and casting route?

First choose a route you can control and a position from which you can land a fish. Then select running depth and retrieve style. See our plug, spinner and soft-plastic comparison for the lure families. Avoiding an unsuitable route matters more here than buying a larger tackle box.

If you choose a heavier lure, check the rod’s rating against the complete rig. Lift the returning lure out under control, without swinging it towards yourself or another person. Use the pike profile for appearance and identification.

What should I prepare before landing a pike?

  1. Open a sufficiently large landing net and choose a safe landing position.
  2. Put long pliers and suitable hook cutters within reach.
  3. Prepare a wet mat if the fish will need to come out; do not place it on gravel or concrete.
  4. Arrange experienced help if you have not practised unhooking pike. Your first catch is not the moment to learn hand placement from a picture.

Unhooking without hurried improvisation

Keep the fish in the water in the net while preparing, where this is safe and practical. Look at the hook positions first. You need access with pliers and cutters without pulling blindly. Learn any specialist hand grip in person with an experienced angler; this article does not demonstrate it with an illustration.

Keep the fish low and supported, minimise time out of water and do not lift it by the line. A photograph can wait until the equipment is ready. Our landing, unhooking and release guide covers general preparation. Check the closed season, permitted hooks and other rules for your chosen Croatian water before fishing.
