Description
Spined loach (Cobitis taenia) is a freshwater fish usually reaching 8-10 cm in length. Although widespread in Europe, related endemic species exist in Croatia.
Habitat
Lives in slow and still waters, including rivers, streams, lakes and ponds. Prefers sandy or muddy bottoms with abundant vegetation and often buries itself during the day.
Diet
It is a carnivore; it feeds by filtering sand in search of food particles, small animals and other organic material.
Regulations and Responsible Fishing
This species is strictly protected, so fishing and keeping catches are not allowed.
For strictly protected species, retention is not allowed regardless of size.
